Saved From What?

From church people is the question, “Are you saved?” This is to presume that God is involved in what being saved means. But there are many people around the world who don’t feel like they need to be saved at all. In fact, they might ask the question from what you are asking me to be saved.

This may be academic for many churchgoers. However, it may also be an assumption as well. Let us consider that you are going to approach a person you have never met and then you are going to ask them if they are saved. If they have no biblical background or church attendance, they may be confused by your question. They may feel quite content in their current state of life. Let us answer the question, “From what are you asking me to be saved?” Here are some answers you could offer in reply.

Biblically and philosophically, there is a right and wrong to life. Likewise, there must be a hell if there is a heaven. There is always the opposite. Positive has the opposite of negative even when it comes to atoms. There is a North Pole and the South Pole. There is an up and there is a down. There is an in and there is an out. Either we are on one side, or we are on the other side. No one can be on both sides.

God did not create hell for human beings. He created it for Satan and his demons. During the time of the tribulation, hell will be the eternal abode for the antichrist and his companions as well. Hell was created as an eternal abode and an eternal punishment for evil of those who subscribe to it. However, those who reject the grace of God through the love of Jesus Christ and his sacrifice, automatically make themselves eligible to go to hell.

That means if a person is to be saved, their acceptance of Christ as Savior says that they are saved from hell. There is no middle ground. The choice is either God or Satan. The choice is either heaven or hell. If people are bound for hell but they are saved, then they are saved from hell. So, the first answer to the question is that they are saved from eternal damnation.

But there is more about being saved! When a person enters that state of being saved, his life becomes a turnabout in a different direction. We do not have to wait until eternity to be saved from something. The person that is saved is also in the process of being saved in this current lifetime. There is saved from bad choices. They are saved from a former lifestyle. They are saved from an attitude that is focused on self and earthly things. They are saved from lust and carnality. They are in the process of having their life saved as it becomes the life of a new creation.

The believer is not only saved from, but the believer is also saved to. The believer has a new direction in life. A new purpose. A new goal. A new ambition. A new desire. A new support system. A new priority. A new relationship on a divine level as well as an earthly level. A new guidance from God. A new way to have needs met. A new source of comfort and peace. A new revelation for the definition of real love. A new way to resist negative experiences that can enter one’s life. A new confidence that is not just from within but also from above.

If a person were drowning in the lake, no one would ask from what they would be saved. It is a foregone conclusion. The importance is that a form of being saved was in the process. Someone had to extend their hand to reach the person out of the water. We would say they are saved from the water, but they are really saved to the person that brought them out of the water. This is why we say it is so important to accept Christ as your Savior who is the only one that can save us from the murky waters of this world.
