Most people are familiar with the story of the Tower of Babel. It is recorded in Genesis 11. At that time, they all spoke the same language. For some unknown reason they decided to build a tower whose top would reach into heaven. Of course, it was because of God that they were dispersed without completing the tower since he changed their language, and they could not understand each other. At that time mankind had the audacity to think that they could reach up into heaven.
Their efforts were not entirely strange because today many people are trying to assure their afterlife by their own works. This is a good contrast between man trying to gain heaven versus God making it possible through the shed blood of his son Jesus Christ. It was God’s desire that all people would be with him in heaven as recorded in various verses in the Bible. However, mankind rejects the only way that God provided in favor of their own works.
Inserted in the story of the Tower of Babel is an interesting comment that is often overlooked. It says in verse six, “…. Now nothing will be restrained from them which they have imagined to do.” Not only is this verse true, but it has also been lived out through the centuries and even in our own lifetimes. Think of the inventions that have occurred in your lifetime. Think of the people that are a hundred years old and more. They have seen so much, including the invention of the airplane and space travel.
Aside from inventions, see how society has degenerated drastically. Certainly, in my lifetime the world is not what it used to be. That is all because the unredeemed leave God out of their thinking completely. We are now living in a time in which anything goes. Never would I have thought that there would be a discussion around a biological male being allowed to go into a woman’s restroom. Just today I saw on the news the parents who were objecting to their daughter being required to sleep in the same bed with the transsexual.
This is all a fulfillment of the prophecy that God made in Genesis. Whatever man desires and imagines doing he has decided to fulfill it. It might involve morals. It might be laws that are implemented. It certainly would include the movies that are offered to us. This is a time in which Christians must be very discerning. Believers must not allow themselves to be sucked into the propaganda of evil. We must be strong and true to the biblical principles that we said we would embrace. As the future unfolds, the prophet Isaiah declared that which is now happening before our eyes that wrong will be right and right will be wrong. Our only defense is God. We must stay true to him and honor him with our behavior and with our attitude and with our resistance against society’s pressure.
