Naming the Newborn Christ

The Bible is full of phrases and names used to describe Jesus Christ. According to Matthew, chapter 1, at his birth his naming was significant. He was to be called Jesus by the instructions of the angel which means “God will save.” In a similar way he was called Emmanuelle which means “God with us.”

This little baby was born to be among us to save us. He was born at a time when the world needed God more than ever because the Jews were plunging headlong into open revolt against Rome. Their taxation was about 35 to 40% of the man’s pay. Self-proclaimed Messiahs sought the glory of battle and honor by cutthroats. Formalize religion was too aloft for the common man’s spiritual needs. The nation’s forests were gone, food supplies were dwindling, and the facts were becoming more and more obvious that things had gone too far unless there was direct divine intervention. Thus, the Christ child came among us to save us.

Consider the act of his coming. According to Romans 13 ; 12-14, he came to save us from our conscientious purposeful delightful benefit and habit of sin. Mankind ignorantly and stupidly from a lack of spirituality made their lives self-evaluated and of little concern. They withheld the needed obedience to God not because of the good within them but because of their laziness, selfishness, shortsightedness.

Consider the fact that Jesus came. He came to save us from the very nature of sin according to Psalm 51: 5. Without realizing it or recognizing it sin was having a corrupting corroding influence on each and every person. Humankind was experiencing the deformity of God’s original intent. The result was roadblocks to the future that God intended.

Consider the lack of escape from the consequences of sin. Jesus came among us to save us as the only God-man of history according to John 1: 14. He truly was woman born. He was not a phantom. He truly saw, heard, responded to the deeds around him with outstretched arms. He grew in stature and wisdom according to the prophets. He delivered hope when all seemed lost. He was prophesied to be born according to the Davidic line.

This babe came among us to redeem us from the act of sin. He came among us to redeem us from the fact of sin. He came among us with the lack of sin. He came for you and me.
