A verse in the book of Revelation has been grossly misinterpreted over the years. In chapter 3 verse twenty and twenty-one has been taken out of context to use in witnessing to the unsaved. However, Jesus is speaking to the church of Laodicea. He accused the church of being lukewarm. He also observed that they thought themselves rich but were not. He encouraged the entire church to repent. Then he said he was standing at the door knocking so that if anyone opened the door he would come in and have fellowship together.
This is a picture of our modern-day church. We have mega churches. We try to attract people to attend the church by fancy programs. Jesus said that that church as well as the church today is in a sad shape. We know this was written to the church of Laodicea because verse twenty-two concludes in the same way it did with the letters to the other churches. In the future let us keep in mind the warning that Jesus gave to us and not use this Scripture inappropriately but take it as a review of where we all stand before God.
