In the first chapter of Mark is a wonderful story with a sad ending. Beginning in verse forty, a man went to Jesus, begging for healing. Jesus had compassion on him and did heal him from his leprosy. Then Jesus instructed the man to go to the priest so that he can be verified his healing according to the Mosaic law. He also told the man not to tell anyone of his healing. We discover the word “but” that begins verse forty-five. The healed leper published the miracle abroad significantly and contrary to the instructions of Jesus.
The verse adds a tragic statement that because of the man’s behavior, Jesus could no more openly enter into the city. The man in effect ruined the plans and ministry of Jesus in that city. Why was this such a big deal?
- It is obvious by the short narrative that the man wanted to draw attention to himself instead of praise to Jesus. He wanted everybody to know that he was healed and could mingle among them once again. His efforts were not with the intention of glorifying Jesus or furthering the efforts of Jesus. It was all about the man.
- Jesus gave the man personal specific directions for what he should do after having received his healing. He totally ignored the instructions of Jesus by telling everyone of his healing. He had enough confidence in Jesus to be healed but not enough subjection to Jesus to be obedient.
- The man did not operate as a witness for Jesus so that other people would come to him. There is no record that because of the man broadcasting his healing that anyone was either healed or saved. He made an effort of futility.
- The instruction from Jesus was very easy. He said not to tell anyone. Jesus gave him no other assignment. The man pledged no followership to Jesus. Jesus simply wanted him to be healed and not tell anyone that he did it.
- If we are to give the man credit, we might rationalize that he did this disobedience in good faith. We might say that he was innocent in his disobedience. We could also agree that the man was so happy to be healed that he wanted to share his new life. However, this was not in the instructions of Jesus. He said to the man not to tell anyone. Period.
- It is so easy for any of us to miss the mark when God’s instructions are so plain. Again, this is simple. If the Bible says to do it or not do it, that should be our obedience. Review your Christian life. Can you not agree with me that we have a lot in common with this man in the Bible? Jesus said that what he asked of his followers was not intended to be difficult. Let us all examine our relation to  Jesus and what the Bible says for our lives. Pledge with me to accept the Word of God as a vital part of how we live our lives.
