We are constantly bombarded with the need to make decisions. It might be something simple such as what flavor of ice cream to eat. It might be something consequential such as getting married. It could include matters of our place in society or how we will experience eternity. Whatever is the issue, there is always a consequence to making a decision. Here is a suggestion for how to go through certain steps to make a decision.
Naturally the first thing that we always want to do is to make sure that we have a right relationship with God. It would be foolish for us to expect God to help us make a decision if we don’t have a good relationship with him. Pray for yourself to be open to God’s guidance.
When you’re satisfied that you are a believer in Jesus Christ, ask for the Holy Spirit to lead you so that you might have a thorough understanding of all the facts and details. To do so means that you must maintain a healthy prayer life. Only the Holy Spirit can give us the kind of understanding we need when it comes to making a decision.
Make sure that you collect all the facts involving the issue. Be careful to include those facts that would otherwise elude you. You may need to ask questions. You may need to do research. Whatever you need to do, make sure you thoroughly educate yourself.
With all the options before you, select what you think is the most logical choice. When heading toward a specific choice allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life for help with that choice. Also, when you make a choice, it must be without prejudice, predetermination, and with no ulterior motives.
Once you believe what direction is the right choice, do so with courage, honesty, and concern for the situation, including those people that are involved. It is highly unlikely that God will send a divine messenger to tell you what to do. He gave you a brain and expects you to use it. Put that decision in motion.
Assess the results of your decision while giving God the glory. Accept the responsibility for whatever consequences that will occur because that decision is your decision! Remember that God may have his own agenda. While honestly following the steps you still may have missed the point. If that is the case, start over by reviewing how you reached the choice that you made.
Be brave enough to experience the consequences whether you made the right choice or not because you have no right to blame anyone else. Avoid expecting other people to make a decision for you. It is permissible to take input from others but not rely on them to decide for you. Exert your right to be yourself without incriminating who you are, not blaming yourself if you don’t like the results. On the other hand, enjoy and empower yourself for having made the right decision.
