The Forgotten Story of July 4th

As we celebrate the Declaration of Independence today, let us reflect back on those who signed that most important document for the creation of United States of America.

Of those who signed, the following happened to them:

Five of them were captured as traders and tortured

Twelve of them had their homes ransacked and burned

Two of them had their son serve in the revolutionary army

Two other sons were captured by the British who were enemies

Nine of them fought and died themselves in the Revolutionary war

Here are some examples of those individuals who made great sacrifices for you and me to have cookouts today and stand in awl at the fireworks:

Carter Braxton had a merchant fleet that was destroyed. He had to sell his home for taxes and then died in rags

Thomas Nelms’ home was used as a British headquarters. He sent word to Washington to destroy it

Francis Lewis lost his home, fell into poverty, his wife was imprisoned, and she later died

John Hart was driven from his dying wife’s bedside into the fields while his gristmill was destroyed. His thirteen children fled for safety to never be seen again. He died alone.

Let the world know that America was founded at the cost of these great men even though you may have never heard their names. America must be the kind of nation that honors the sacrifice of these men as part of the July 4 celebration. Let the world know that deep in our roots is a courage from years gone by. Let the world know that America is resolved to stand for freedom!
