How to Describe God

Unfortunately, some people think of God as “the man upstairs,” or “the big guy,” or think of him as only being in heaven and having very little to do with the affairs of individuals here on earth.

The traditional way to describe God is that he is omnipresent, all wise, and all-powerful. Of course, those are all true of what is said of him. However, it may be difficult for us to wrap our heads around those concepts. How can we think of him being all-powerful, for instance? In fact, some of the traditional ways about thinking of God may even get in our way.

Allow me to propose another way to think about God or describe him. The word that I prefer to use is ABSOLUTE.  To me that word means there is no room left for compromise or debate. For some to think about God it means, in him being absolute there is nothing left to consider. There is no wiggle room or second-guessing. There is no reinterpretation of how to think about God.

Consider the fact that God is ABSOLUTE in all that he does, considers, and his attitude. To me, God’s love is absolute! When reflecting on his wisdom and knowledge, it is absolute. When thinking about where God is, he is absolute. For instance, the Scripture has explained that there is nowhere God is not. We can rely on the absolute God.

This was Satan’s mistake when he rebelled against God. He did not take into consideration that God was totally absolute so that there would be no tolerance in any means to resist him or to try to overthrow him. Since Satan is not absolute, he made the mistake of assuming he could ascend to the throne of God meeting he was  devoid of divinity. This was not possible because he was not absolute, and God is absolute.

When you think of creation, think of God who is so absolute there is no room for question about how things came to be. When you think of God’s love, his desire to see all of mankind redeemed because it was absolute that caused him to send his only begotten son to die on the cross for us. When you think of how God hears our prayers when there are so many millions and millions of people also praying, remind yourself that he is so absolute that he has the total ability to recognize the cares and concerns of each and every person.

When it comes to worshiping God, we are worshiping him because he is so absolute and so complete that we can rely on him so that we might be offering praise for his goodness. We do not give thanks to a god that has flaws or is inferior in any way. We show our deepest appreciation to the absolute God who provides for us. To think of God’s nature as consistent and unchanging, it is because he is absolute. Encourage yourself as you serve him and pray to him because you are calling on the Absolute God.

Listen to this hymn that so beautifully summarizes how absolute God is that there is “no shadow of turning with him: …………….”
