Unrequited love

There was a man who had the deepest feeling of love, but it was not returned. In fact, it was ignored. It had no impact on the one being loved. No matter what the man did, it made no difference. Regardless of well wishes or sacrifices the man-made, he could get no response from the one he loved. It was not that there was anything wrong with the man. There simply was no connection between the two and that was the blame of the one being loved. The man tried to get attention. He made every effort to be understood about his deep feelings all to no affect.

Continually, the man was rejected on every front. It even got to the point that his love became an object of ridicule in favor of another man who had no genuine feelings and had nothing to offer. Even though there was no benefit in loving the second man in return, the first man was continually brushed aside. He wrote letters to the one he loved. He sent emissaries to explain the depths of his love. Eventually he made significant sacrifices that again were rejected. The cost to the man was immense. Even though he was patient, the pain mounted more and more from his love being rejected. There was no explanation why the love was rebuffed. It just seemed that it was not wanted even though it would’ve been a wonderful match. There would have been so many benefits to accept the love that was offered.

On another level, this scenario is an example of God’s love for mankind and how he has been rejected over and over. There’s no way to measure the depth of God’s love for humans. There was  also no way to explain why having God and all that he offered should be rejected. God provided his love letter to people called the Bible yet so many  ignore reading it. God sent his son to pay whatever price was necessary to reinstate a relationship with people. Very few appreciated the great sacrifice that the Father and Son did. The interjection of God’s Holy Spirit into society as a witness to his love has made little affect. It is obvious that most of the human race would prefer to live their lives on their own standard while ignoring the love of God. When the time comes to face God and explain the reason for the rejection, there are those who think that their life was good enough without enjoying God’s love. The many blessings of answered prayers, compassion, and guidance are unresponsive against the stubbornness of human thinking.

What would you do if you loved somebody intensely and yet they ignored you? How far would you go to get their attention so they would return love to you? What desires do you have in this world that are more important than  to enjoy fellowship on the highest level with God? If you love someone immensely and that person turns you away, how would you feel? The situation we have discussed is exactly what’s happening in the lives of so many people who will not open their hearts to the love of God.
