You Don’t Expect That; Do You?

I heard a story about a young pastor who became discouraged with his service to a particular church. Every time he preached;  he was sure that the sermon was excellent. He explained the details of the Scripture. He made popular reference to historical customs. He cross referenced various Bible verses. He used the right tone and emphasis of his words.

Even so he did all he could think to do. However, there was virtually no response from the congregation. No one accepted Christ as their Savior. No one came forward to rededicate their life. There was not one person who felt led to join in the ministry. Although no one in the church complained, it did not seem that anything happened as a result of his sermons.

Then one day he found himself in a conversation with a famous evangelist. He explained his woes and concerns to the aged minister. He laid out how he prepared for his sermons. The pastor explained how he selected the topic of his sermons. He vented how frustrated he was that nothing happened. He complained that he felt like he was wasting his time.

The evangelist asked him a question the put the minister in awe. His question was, “Surely you don’t expect people to come when you preach, do you; especially every time you speak?”

The pastor thought for a minute. He hung his head down. In a beaten tone of voice he confessed, “I guess I don’t expect that.” The evangelist said, “That is your problem. You don’t expect results. You just want results.”

This can be true for all of us. When we pray, do we really expect God to answer our prayer? As we put forth our concerns before the Almighty Creator, do we expect him in all his majesty to pay attention to the meager words we say to him?

The Bible says that we should knock, and it will be opened unto us. Perhaps discouragement has gripped our minds. It could be that we are disappointed, emotionally distraught because nothing happens. Our prayers are mighty words to the Mighty God! As we seek him, it is our privilege, obligation, and duty to expect a response. Otherwise, we’re just making a birthday wish blowing out our candles of good intent.

Pray- with expectation!!!
