With the hostile uprising of radical liberals, a criminal has been turned into a saint. The monuments to war heroes have been toppled. Buildings have been burned. People have been killed in the chaos. Politicians with weak leadership skills have stood by watching America being turned into a war zone. In the midst of the anarchy, statues of Christopher Columbus have been destroyed. Those who have caused the bedlam declares that the man who is credited with discovering America as a horrible person.
They say he maimed indigenous people, killed them, and enslaved them. They say that his purpose in coming to the opposite side of the globe was for personal gain and prestige. The fallacy of history is that it cannot be judged by today’s standards. It is uncertain how valid these claims have been. Let us say for the sake of discussion some of the claims are true. First, we cannot change history. Second, we cannot ignore the benefits embedded in history as done by Columbus.
We do know for a fact that his intention was to find better access to the sources of spices that could be used with the European tainted food. Also, he put to rest the question about the world being round. If we had to lambaste Columbus and all his efforts, we must do the same to all the other explorers who searched out the New World. The truth is that many terrible things have happened in history. No amount of the destruction of statues can remedy that. The statute to Christopher Columbus is a remembrance of his bravery and the bravery of all his crew. There is no doubt that those with good intentions in history mixed their efforts with dastardly deeds.
We can look back at our own recent history confirming that the bad things that were done just a few years ago are certainly bad and despicable. Yet, no one complains. No one has been prosecuted. No one has been held accountable. In effect, we are honoring Columbus and his crew, but we are expressing our gratitude that the America where we live now came to be because of those who made immense sacrifices. We can say that God took bad things and made them good for us today. That is what we are celebrating!
