When a person asks Christ to be his Savior, he is more than a reformed version of himself. It is not just that he becomes a better person. A transaction occurs between the Almighty God and his created being – mankind. There is a consequence, a result of that new relationship. We have before us for discussion the remarkable concept that he who created the most distant stars in the sky desires to have an interaction with the highest of what he is done here on earth. It is expected by the working of the Holy Spirit in an individual’s life that things change inside and outside for how that person lives. The road a person travels on this earth and toward eternity is determined as to what they become through Christ. Consider with me what that means.
We begin first by recognizing that the human being does not have a natural instinct to serve God. Because of his fallen nature, man has become self-centered and self-serving. He has little desire to please God in the various areas of his life. Every person born, every person that lives out his years is in a state of rebellion against God’s original intention for him. No amount of reform or good wishes can make a difference in that regard. We are like clay that lays among the other soils of the earth, undeveloped, without potential, without purpose. It takes God to reach into that muck and mire of what we are to make a difference.
When we have had our souls rejuvenated by God’s salvation, something should be different. To be a Christian means something. It does not mean the person is devout or a churchgoer or a nice person. It means that a creative action has occurred within that person’s spirit and mind. The result should be obvious and monumental. Every human being is given the opportunity to be transformed in a miraculous, creative manner equal to that of the original creation of the earth and all that there is. A fundamental difference becomes present within the individuals that accept Christ.
It is said in1 Peter 2:9 that, “you are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” For us to transfer into this marvelous state, it is not by our own selves but by the miracle of God working in the submissive heart. It is for this reason that as we live these lives so short and sometimes so tumultuous that the words of Psalm 46:1 are so true when David reminds us in his behalf, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Expand your thinking to realize that God actually moved heaven and earth for every one of us to have an eternal prospect with him. So precious is this work of God that one of the 10 Commandments stands out that says we should not take the name of the Lord our God in vain. In our modern age it is so easy to reference God as a cliché. To use the phrase, “O God” as a common expression is a dastard contradiction to our relationship with him.
Through Christ we become more than we can ever conceive ourselves to be. It is because of Christ that lives have changed, habits broken, families reconciled, and blessings revealed. In Christ we have hope whenever there was no hope. We are transformed as if our soul is born again. That is exactly what has happened in Christ for the believer. Because of Christ we have no fear since he has conquered the worst of the worst by defeating death. With the Spirit of Christ active in our lives we can realize peace and joy, not because what the world offers but what is active within us. What a fantastic occurrence that becomes present within the life of a person who is surrendered to God. He stands ready to encourage us and rescue us by giving us an eternal destiny that we could never imagine in a thousand years.
