When Jesus spoke of light, he did not say that he was similar or like light. He wanted to be known as the light for all the world just as the Pillar of Fire which guided the wandering Israelites at night or the lampstand which lighted the holy of holies of the tabernacle. He is the light that drives away darkness and confusion. Jesus promises to be the light for all those willing to respond to him. What then is true of light and therefore true of Christ?
Generally speaking, light reveals, interprets the universe. Without light, we would be unable to relate to what is around us. That means as we look about, we then are able to discover the ugly versus the beautiful in our surroundings. Because we are able to see in the light, we are able to detect when we might bump into each other or things in our surroundings. The importance when speaking of life in general, we can know that light drives await darkness. In the case of the Christian, it drives away the darkness of ignorance, sin, and a wrong living.
With Jesus as the light of the world, he gives us the opportunity for what ought to be. (Matthew 5:14) As the light of the world, he is able to shine on the way society should be as contrary to what people want it to be. A person of the world is easily satisfied with the present while postponing when God would speak to him. This individual simply is not serious about eternal matters. To them what is unfinished is of no concern. Of course, the biggest unfinished issue is what to do about one’s eternal soul.
With Jesus as the light of life, we can imitate a plant that seeks light while it seeks life. Without spiritual ambition, the sun shines in vain for those who hide in the dungeon of sin. By offering himself as the light that is rejected, we are without answers. Our greatest questions of life should be when the best seems possible, the heart is tender, the soul is moved and troubled by unanswered questions without Christ.
Since Jesus is our light, there is no need for proof to his existence in the same way there is no need for proof that light exists. It will shine for whenever men need to see. Jesus remains on his throne of authority regardless of people’s opinions about him. He knows who he is as the Son of God. No one needed to reveal that to him. When he walked this earth, Jesus was very conscience of his destiny. Our Lord’s mission and character while he performed his ministry here was perfectly pure.
Unfortunately, he was above human appreciation and sometimes even recognition. With darkness all around us at nighttime, the only way to know a safe path is by the light that shines ahead. In a Similar Way, Jesus lights ahead of our lives expecting us to follow and stay in his light.
