Are You Comfortable?

If you are comfortable with your life, with circumstances, with what you have, with the people in your life, then SOMETHING IS WRONG!

Jesus told Nicodemus in John chapter 3 his life was not good enough. He told him that he had to be born again. Naturally, this was confusing to Nicodemus. The point Jesus was making was that he could no longer be comfortable with the life he was living. Something had to change.

Jesus told the woman by the well in Samaria that her relationships were not acceptable. She had , five men in her life. She came to the well to get water at a time that was the hottest of the day when no other woman would be present. He told her that he knew of the drink that she would never thirst. This intrigued her and led to the fact that she had to have new relationships with other people and with God. (John 4)

When Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the 5000, the first instruction for them was that they should all sit down in the grass. They all came from various walks of life, many of them traveled a great distance to hear Jesus preach. Even though most of them were strangers to the other people, they became unified by the food that Jesus provided beyond natural means. (John 6)

There was a woman that was caught in the very act of adultery. According to the Mosaic law, she should have been stoned to death. Her sin was monumental before man and God. Her life was in a state of upheaval. She was a pawn in the hands of religious leaders. She had nowhere to turn, realizing that every moment that passed she could be slain by the self-righteous. Her circumstance was dire. It was hopeless. Yet when the leaders were driven away by Jesus’ probing question of who had no sin in their lives, she was left alone with Christ who said go and sin no more. Her circumstance took a drastic turn for the positive.(John 8)

A close friend of Jesus became seriously ill. Because Jesus intentionally delayed coming to Lazarus he had already died. The worst of the worst happened. He was buried without any hope or prospects for a future. Jesus intervened and raised Lazarus from the dead. (John 11)

There was  a man who came to Jesus wanting to know how he could earn heaven but was disappointed when Jesus said for him to give up his riches. He had every opportunity to serve God but chose money instead. For all we know he went to hell as a rich man. (Mark 10)

Jesus forewarn his disciples by telling them that he was going to be persecuted, they should expect themselves also to be persecuted because a servant is no greater than the Master. He wanted the disciples to understand that the message they were to carry into the world would result in serious consequences.(John 15)

These are just a few examples from the Gospels. They remind us that our life cannot be comfortable, our circumstances cannot be acceptable, what we have has its limits, and the people in our lives are not always reliable. BUT Jesus makes the difference. A true believer in Christ recognizes that we cannot be content with traveling through this world as it is and what it has to offer. We must look to Christ and the future that he offers us. We must be motivated in faith to serve the Lord in whatever fashion he offers us. We must have changes in our nature and our attitude. We must be grounded in God and not the things of this world. In all these examples, the decision was voluntary by the people involved. What is your choice?
