Fruit of the Holy Spirit – Galatians 5

The struggle of the Galatian church was from within the congregation, not attacks from the world. The influence of some church members was negative and profound. Paul wanted the church to realize that the Christian experience was not something going on around the believers  but was with in the believer.

It was not something defined by others but demonstrated by God. Right Christian living was an outworking of Christ in the believer. In the church there were errors of human thinking, opinion that was imposed on others. Paul tells us that the only way to counter and defend wrong, sinful living of the church is by the working of the Holy Spirit to detect and reject error.

The church is not a place for leaders but for followers of Christ. It is not a place for dominance of human beings on others. It is where submission to Christ is premier. It is not a place for turmoil but for the peace of Christ. The world offers should be rejected. Therefore, the Christian displays the fruit of the Spirit as a natural result of the Spirit abiding within the person. The fruit of the Spirit is all those characteristics taken together and displayed as the result of the Holy Spirit. It is from the effects of the Holy Spirit operating within the believer.

This is why we are told not to quench the Holy Spirit. As a Christian matures, he will become more sensitive to spiritual matters. He will develop a listening ear to the Spirit. So many people have salvation and not much more, in its testimony against the world. The only solution we can have is to turn our backs on the world and all the inclinations that it would build in a weak spiritual life.
