Someone Like Satan – Exodus 4:21

God told Moses to confront Pharaoh for the freedom of the Israelites even though he stuttered, even though he needed Aaron his brother to interpret what he said. Pharaoh’s reply was to increase the burdens of the people. Often, we refer to Egypt as a type of the world and the Exodus out of Egypt as a believer’s  salvation to heavens promised land. With that thought in mind, we could say that Pharaoh is someone like Satan whose  desire is to keep mankind in bondage.

Notice Pharaoh’s opposition to God’s people, to God himself. By increasing the burdens and the affliction that he made on the Israelites, he thought he was demonstrating his power. In fact, he was challenging the right of God to reign. (Exodus 5:2)  That’s what Satan did in the beginning when he said he wanted to replace God in heaven. In his arrogance, both Pharaoh and Satan concluded that they had more authority than the Almighty God. By Pharaoh’s resistance, he was challenging the Word of God to be heard. ( Exodus 5:9)  His intention to was to ignore God. Even in the Garden of Eden, Satan lied to Eve by challenging the words of God. Because the Israelites were God’s people, Pharaoh challenged them for the right to be free. As far as Pharaoh was concerned, the Israelites were just a tool, as slaves for what he wanted to happen. (Exodus 5:13)

Notice the offers that Pharaoh made to Moses. All through their confrontation, Pharaoh wanted to demonstrate his authority. It behooves us to remember Satan seeks to reign over our lives until some have lost our eternal souls in hell. However, God was not going to permit this either by Pharaoh or by Satan. Hebrews 2: 1 says, “For as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise toke part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil.” 1 John 3:8 says, “… For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

Notice the progressive compromises that Pharaoh made to Moses in the same way that Satan tries to get us to compromise with his program. Pharaoh said that they could be reformed but not saved.(Exodus 8:25)   Then he said they could be saved but not separated from his power.(Exodus 8:28)   Later, Pharaoh told Moses that his people could be separated but not dedicated.(Exodus 10:11)  His last offer was to be dedicated but not surrendered. In that same way, Pharaoh wants us to be dedicated to religion but not God. (Exodus 10:23-24) What a joy it is for believers to frustrate the work of Satan by the power of God within!

Notice how Moses overcame Pharaoh by the presence of God in his life. Had Moses cooperated with Pharaoh it would be in the same way  for us to cooperate with Satan. The problem still existed. This would’ve been the cause for the defeat of Moses and, in essence, to join forces with the enemy for his own defeat. The way Moses enjoyed an overcoming life was by remaining in communication with God.(Exodus 5:22) He relied on God, not himself, to deliver the people.(Exodus 6:6)  Moses was able to stand before the most powerful ruler because he persistently responded by being available to God for his use. (Exodus 12:30,32)

Ours is to be aware of the enemy and the compromises that he wants us to make in our lives. He tries to entice us by saying that everything will be acceptable according to his own plans. Brothers and sisters, we must imitate Moses. We must stand strong against the temptations of Satan in the same way Moses did to Pharaoh. By the resistance of God’s man, many blessings followed. By our insistence to be faithful to the Lord, blessings will await us. First and foremost, the blessing is to be freed and forgiven from our sins. Then we have the promise of a better life in eternity, just as Moses did for his people when they were freed from Pharaoh to go to the promised land.
