We have before us in this text the need to search for a man. This cannot be any man. It must be THE man that God wants to use in a special way. As we consider the Scripture, let us look over the credentials of a God-fearing man who is close to him and will serve him no matter what.
Through this text we can also put to ourselves in our modern world a challenge to find the godly man. For us he must be an example, the leader, maybe even what we would call the ideal, a figurehead, and to some who would be a hero. The man that God selects in our midst will be a key figure to influence the rest of the world, the rest of the community. We cannot find such a person who would raise his hand volunteering to be an instrument of blessing. He must be a victor in his own way.
We expect this man as a Christian to know and appreciate love as he gives it forth. Ironically, in his own world he might also be a man who is hated by those who would see him destroyed instead of seeing him do God’s work. Many men are available but only a few can be the tower of strength by the Holy Spirit chosen to be special for a special reason. This man must be distinctly different. He must be the kind of person who depends on facts and reason while exercising faith so that he can be in our church and our community the “Man of the Hour.”
We desperately need godly man to have a spiritually positive influence on us. He must be aware of all that is around him including his responsibilities to family and church. We look for such a person who is to cooperate with others in the evangelistic outreach for the salvation of souls. If we find such a man, he will be ever conscious that someone is following him, influenced by him, and even admires him. For most of all, he must be burdened in his heart by the fact that the world is a shipwreck of sinners.
This individual can only and must only be a man of faith. His faith is evidenced by how he functions in the same way a tree grows by spreading its limbs. As he exercises his faith, he will be his own benefactor spiritually. The fact of the matter is that faith is very rational. It has its own understanding. The person of faith is fully informed about his world. Despite all of his limitations for temptation to sin, perhaps sickness in his body, we anticipate the godly man to be prepared to face the world to see something happen. He is not a daydreamer but is a dreamer.
If we are to have such a person in our midst, he must also be a man of action not just talk. We all know that talk is cheap. Hope is worthless if it is not grounded in God. Time is a vicious animal that can turn on all of us and we cannot wait for such a man to step forward and be a blessing because God has blessed him. We know he is blessed because he is never satisfied with the status quo of the spiritual world as evidenced by another people. He is a kind of person that is not satisfied but as always content because of his relationship with God. He will never be a man searching but will always be curious.
I have offered before you a search similar as the disciples conducted over 2000 years ago. They found seven men who fit the qualifications of being filled with the Spirit and determined to serve the Lord. Now I ask you – are you such a person?
