Holier Than Thou – 1 Peter 5: 5,6

Some people have the audacity to think that they have a market on God’s blessings. They believe themselves to be special. The image that they like to project for themselves is that of a super Christian. Beware of such a person because their lifestyle leans toward narcissism. If that be the case, they expect other people to support their own idea of how they live out the Christian experience.

The dangers associated with such a person my cause you to develop an inferiority complex. They are so wonderful, and you could never match up for how wonderful they are. They know everything about the Bible even though it is largely their own interpretation. Since they are so much of a giant in the spiritual world, they expect their opinion to be the final word. To challenge such a person could mean suicide for your reputation among the larger association of friends.

This person lacks humility even though he thinks of himself in that way. He appreciates all the praise given from those who feel obligated to offer it. The person under discussion can be quite dangerous in the church environment. He can distract from the biblical authority of the leaders. He might vote no,  just for the sake of it for matters that require a group consensus. This brings him added attention because his opinion is so important.

The holier than thou person might also be a church hopper going from congregation to congregation until no longer tolerated in the previous church. It might be a matter of question by examining the fruits they display that they are not even Christian. This is the hidden truth for them so they can have dominance over what other person is willing to follow . Avoid trying to convince such an individual to make changes. That would destroy their whole self-image concept.

Our mission is to avoid falling into such a trap which becomes sin. To be strong in our Christian faith and dedicated to the Lord, we must follow the instructions of Jesus when he said, “whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18: 4)   James added these words, “God resisted the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”(4:6)  The beauty of these words is that there are times in which people are humble and don’t even realize it. Other people may, but not the humble person. What irony this is that the proud person intentionally elevates himself while the humble person simply abides under God’s Holy Spirit.
