This is a word of advice and a warning to all leaders of churches. Christians like to think of themselves as welcoming. They prefer to support whoever comes through the doors for whatever needs they may have. However, there is a significant issue that the church must face head on at this time of liberal thinking.
Especially for those who work with children it is important to perform a background check on anyone who volunteers. This may sound brash and unkind. Nevertheless, you must learn from the experience of others. It is likely that some people apply for membership or volunteer to do certain tasks in the church. It can be heartwarming to know somebody declares a calling from God to work within the church.
When it comes time to organize the various programs of the church, we no longer have the freedom to accept any volunteer. A standard must be set for any new person who is willing to serve in the church. What history, what involvement in society, what associates do they have in their private lives, or what background do these people have?
There are churches that have been sued by parents when their child became susceptible to a person that is unstable. Even adults can be manipulated and emotionally harmed by the unqualified. Obviously, I’m not talking about those who fell into sin and then repented. I’m talking about a flaw in their character and their interaction with others in the church. We all sin and cannot be arrogant. We must be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove in our decisions.
The leadership with the backing of the church must decide what person is an acceptable member or worker within the church programs. With the standards of society crumbling before us, it is imperative that we rely on Scripture for our guidance. It is very important that the church make an open policy in which anyone is welcome to worship with the congregation. On the contrary, a Bible based conservative church must decide what to do about and for people with questionable character.
What is the standard for reacting to those who practice homosexuality? What is the standard for those who have a criminal background of pedophilia? What is the standard for a person that has stolen money? So many people can be sitting in the pew looking innocent but, in their heart, and thoughts they might have evil intent.
There is a fine line between the church ministering to everyone and discriminating against those with a doubtful background. The Bible is our guidebook for such issues. We cannot put our members and their children in jeopardy just to say we are supportive and welcoming to everyone.
Whether it be a consideration for new pastor or ministerial staff member or someone who will work a voluntary position, the background of these people must be verified! To say that we are a loving group of people and act ignorantly has no basis in the Bible. Pledge yourself to search out only qualified people. This does not mean anyone who is not qualified cannot attend worship. It does mean they cannot have positions of authority or membership.
