We would normally think if I was going to prophesy that it would rain tomorrow, it would be a 50% chance I would be correct. However, I would need to take into consideration any clouds approaching, centers of high or low, the temperature, and the wind speed. For something as simple as rain prediction, my odds would be much lower than one would originally think. We are now going to apply that same thought to the Scripture cited above in regard to God’s foreknowledge. The main question before us is why was Solomon chosen to be king since David had 10 sons, most of which were older than him?
We have the advantage of looking back at history to answer that question. When David grew old, the question was very current and alive. Let us revisit the question as it would’ve occurred right before the death of David.
Going further into the Scripture, it says in 2 Samuel 12:24 that God loved Solomon. This is the second time that the name Solomon is mentioned following chapter 5, verse 14 that lists the sons born to David in Jerusalem. We must take it that God preselected Solomon to be king after his father’s death.
We are going to explore what God’s foreknowledge told him. Two of the sons were killed namely, Absalom, and Adonijah. Amnon raped his half-sister and for punishment was himself killed. Nathan was supportive of Solomon being King and interceded in his behalf when Adonijah plan to take over the throne. All the other sons in the list of 10 are not mentioned but a little in Scripture with nothing remarkable said about them.
From God’s point of view, Solomon was the logical choice to be king and promised that to David. This study is important to us because we may wonder why God answers our prayers in a specific way that could even be contrary to the requests we offer. Herein is living proof put on paper of God’s foreknowledge and how he exercised it. The same can be said of our prayers today for the way God answers us. Now that we have drawn this to our attention, it can be more comforting in our prayer life and encouraging that we trust God all the same.
