Here are Scriptures that offer guidelines for how to parent children as God would instruct us. I will give a summary of each text and an explanation of how they can guide us as adults in supporting children as members of the family.
After the flood, Noah got drunk, but he generated so much respect from two of his sons that they were sure to express that in their relationships. Genesis 9:23
At a ripe old age, Isaac sought to bless his sons before dying. Even though Jacob tricked his father, the importance of being blessed by him was tantamount. Genesis 27
This text is a negative example indicating how we must treat our children fairly without prejudice. Genesis 37: 4
We must live our lives before the children so that they will honor us and in turn become blessed themselves. Exodus 20:12
We cannot expect our children to honor us if we don’t maintain a divine respect for God. Numbers 3:4
Take a stand for your family against whatever criticism or attacks come their way. Show your love by action. Judges 9: 17
Avoid rash statements that may someday come back to haunt you. 1 Samuel 14:27
Maintain a proper attitude and behavior so you’re able to face any trouble in the family and prevent any choices that are forced upon you.1 Samuel 20:8
Have a positive reputation that lives beyond your grave to affect other members of the family later. 2 Samuel 9:7
Be willing to repent for whatever the circumstances so that your children know you face up to wrongs you have done, even if it was not intentional. 2 Samuel 24:17
Lay the foundation so that your children after you have something on which to build for God. 1 Kings 5:5
Regardless of the upbringing you experienced, live out your life in a positive manner so that your children after you can demonstrate what it is to serve the Lord.1 Kings 15:26
Maintain a spiritual standard before the family without any element of compromise that they could detect.1 Chronicles 24:2
Be eager to show compassion on your children without criticism or rebuke. Psalm 103:13
Always be ready to offer quality instruction and guidance as part of your support for your children. Proverbs 1: 8
Place Jesus as your highest priority without second-guessing God’s plan for your life. Matthew 4:22
Jesus said we must carry our cross as part of our dedication to him. That means that we must carry our cross in front of the children, so they understand service to the Lord daily. Mark 15:21
Be in constant prayer for your children even if everything is going right for them and you. Beware that at any moment situations can change. Luke 9:42
Have proper food and support for your children each day every day so they are not lacking for their needs, and you are not lacking as a parent. Luke 11:11
Always be ready to forgive your child regardless of what they had done or how they have hurt you. The bond between you and your child is sacred. Luke 15:21
Set an example during hard times when God is parenting you for perhaps a sin you have committed so that your child knows how to have a closer relationship with our Lord at all times. Hebrews 12:7
Do not display a negative impression to your children so that they become discouraged in serving the Lord. Colossians 3:21
These are just a few of the Scriptures that we can use as a basis for biblical parenting. They present to us a challenge that we must observe daily. Ak the Holy Spirit to help you as you parent. The Bible is the closest to a handbook on how to be a parent. Rely on it.
