Angels or Aliens?

Through the years people have claimed that they were visited by a mysterious stranger. My own mother before her death said that a nice young man visited her in the nursing home. We checked with the nurse’s station and found that according to the records no one was there. However, she insisted that he did come and was of great help to her. Billy Graham even made such a claim about one of his relatives. From time-to-time people report that they have had an encounter that was quite unusual.

Then on the opposite side of the discussion, there are those who claim that they met aliens. They say they saw flying saucers or that they were even beamed up and had a physical examination by these green men. Some people have said that their encounters were almost normal and that their aliens looked like human beings.

I personally do not believe in UFOs. Therefore, I do not believe in little green men. I will accept that there are times people had unusual experiences with or without a certain being present with them. Years ago, I was driving at nighttime, a little too fast I will admit, and began to slide toward a telephone pole. There was nothing I could do with breaks, acceleration, or steering. And that one split second I accepted the fact that I was going to have a serious car accident. Then it was as if someone took the front of my car and pushed it away from the pole bring me back safely onto the road where I needed to be. I always thought that was the work of an angel. I cannot testify to that in court, nor can I prove it. I can say that without that nudge I would either have been seriously injured or killed.

Daniel in the Old Testament prayed for a long time. An angel finally appeared to him eventually saying that he would have come sooner if he had not been opposed by the prince of the kingdom of Persia for twenty-one days. He said then Michael, one of the chief princes, (an angel) came to help him. In this context we can see that there is spiritual warfare taking place all around us. Ephesians 6:12 says, “for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Angels also may respond to us as part of our prayer life for some benefit.

The main feature of this part of the Christmas story is that angels visited Mary and Joseph, the wise men, the shepherds, Zacharias the husband of Elizabeth who gave birth to John the Baptist, and later when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness an angel ministered to him.

There are many other places where angels appeared to human beings in both the Old and New Testament. They do not necessarily appear wearing wings or in some fantastical outfit. In a spiritual/human form they came to visit people for specific reasons that God would want them to have instructions or guidance. Angels are not to be worshiped. They are instruments of God in our behalf.

It says in Hebrews 13:2 “be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” It is the responsibility of angels to do about the business of God and sometimes be a liaison carrying a message to people.

Christmas is an important time to recognize the work of angels and dispute aliens. As we observe the story of Christ when he was born, keep in mind that God’s messengers are all around us. It would be wise of us to be alert and responsive. There is a spiritual world about us of good and bad. Seek the spiritual good for ourselves and glorify God. Merry Christmas.
