This verse is one of those most often misquoted and misapplied Scriptures. If there are few people that showed up for church, the preacher might say as an excuse that if two or three are gathered together in his name, there he is in the midst. Stop to think about it! Why would Jesus say those words for that reason?
Examine the verses that precede this one. In verse 15 he is talking about two believers who are not getting along and what they should do. Jesus slightly changes the subject by saying whatever extent believers bind or do not bind on earth are also managed or not matched in heaven.
Then he proceeds to the verse we are considering today. What he is really saying is that it only takes two believers in the presence of Christ to bind or not bind. The authority that Christ has given believers is so strong and powerful it is like dynamite. Just think. Two or three believers have the authority when matched with Christ to dictate what is bound.
This is so magnificent! True mature strongly spiritual believers can accomplish anything in the presence of Christ. This is akin to the verse in John 1: 12 that says, “as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. “ That word power shows significance. He gave these believers authority and dominance as a result of believing in his name. Consider what could happen if 24 or 30 or 200 or 300 were gathered together in the presence of Christ exercising the authority he gave them. Spread the word.
