These chapters tell a story that began with a promise and ended in tragedy. When first informed by an angel that the wife of Manoah would have a child ending her inability to conceive, he asked for directions on how to raise the child. (13:12) What a marvelous request that is an example for all soon-to-be parents. From birth it was determined that the baby would be a Nazirite. He was never to have his hair cut. When Samson grew into adulthood, the Spirit of the Lord moved upon him at certain times after he became a judge over Israel. He teased, tormented, and troubled the enemy.
The Philistines had dominance over Israel, but he insisted that his parents make arrangements for him to have a wife that he discovered among the Philistines against his parents’ advice. Thereafter, followed a series of physical altercations with their enemy while all along they repeatedly sought to know the source of Samson’s strength. So much of the episode of Samson’s position as judge was limited to his ability to destroy their enemy while the Bible does not record any form of spiritual maturity to lead his people.
At this point is when Samson had a romantic relationship with Delilah. He was eventually captured by the Philistines; they blinded him and put him in prison in Gaza. At a large banquet Samson was brought forth to be mocked. While in prison his hair grew out again, enabling him to regain his strength. In answer to his prayer, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him so that he could pull down the main pillars of the building killing a large number of the enemy.
Even though he had so many character flaws, God was able to use him. Through him we can learn how God could use us even though the world would say we are not qualified. There is a lingering question that asks how much more could God have used him if he had spiritual strength as well. As the last judge over Israel, we are reminded how important is our reputation before others. We should ask ourselves also what strengths we have that have yet to be dedicated to God for his purposes.
