Paul admonished the members of the Colossian church to both recall their experience with Christ and to look forward to new experiences with him. It is important that we understand that when the Bible speaks of the mysteries of God, Scripture is specifically pointing to Christ himself. Who can explain the truth of the gospel, the love of God that caused Christ to be crucified and later resurrected? What person is there that can fully comprehend everything that it took for us to receive the promise of eternal life?
Today is not much different than the doctrinal harassment that the people of Colossi experienced from cults, from invaders attempting to pervert the simple truth already taught them. In our modern lifetime there were many false teachers who would deny the deity of Christ, the validity and authority of the Scriptures. They tell people false ideas to twist divine teachings that support their own perversities. It has always been the same and will continue until Christ returns to set things right.
This is an important verse for anyone who desires a sincere walk with God. It is vital that we join our brothers and sisters in Christ who lived over 2000 years ago that we all heed a proper relationship with Jesus. That means we obey the encouragement from Paul as he said, “As you have therefore received Christ Jesus…” Recall the manner in which you invited Christ to be your Savior. You did not respond to him lightly. When a person becomes a believer, he must first absorb the humanity and the divinity of Christ. He is the Majestic Lord and Creator of all! He has kingly rule over the universe. Christ has the ability to transform a dilapidated soul into a new creation so that he may innocently stand before God’s Judgment Seat. To become a Christian, a person must recognize who Jesus is and what he is capable of doing.
So then, Paul insists our future walk on this earth must also be grounded in the same conviction we acknowledged in the beginning. After the profound reminder of what happened at the point of salvation, the believer should keep on keeping on in that same exercise of faith. It is not a once for all time basis, but a projection of every future step taken in devotion to God. With the recall of what once happened to us spiritually, we must enhance those past steps every day and every hour.
We cannot call ourselves Christians if we do not conform to and elaborate more and more about how our souls experienced that wonderful transformation. It is our duty to ourselves to be embedded in the reality of who Jesus is so that our walk will reflect nobly on our past submission. No believer can successfully enjoy his spiritual life if he dabbles in sin or anything that does not reflect respectfully on Jesus. Keep on keeping on so that you have a consistent relationship that builds, is magnified, grows, and enhances your position as a child of God.
