End of the world – Matthew 24

No one will know the date that the world will end. The Bible says people will mock the idea of the world ending. What perpetuates repeated  forebodings and what can we learn about ourselves through each other’s reactions?

Usually, these fearful ones sell all they have and go off to some mountain or field and wait for the end. If this is not their reaction, they gather their family, belongings, and food supply to hide in the woods in anticipation for some big bomb from an enemy country.

Has this date setting and fearful reaction fit with  God? Does not mainline Christianity teach that we receive blessings from a loving God? In fact, all that  we have comes as a result of his love. Surely, even the end of the world will be designed for promotion to a better situation for believers.

Perhaps we have difficulty separately consequences of man from that of  God. Maybe we really are testing our lack of trust. In other words, we know ourselves enough to be afraid of ourselves. It does not have to be this way.   All we have to do is be what we say we are. We say that we are intelligent, strong, insightful, and capable.  Instead of searching for a field or stream for safety we should be seeking the  reality of faith.
