This book is very personal written from Paul. It gives us some insight into the ministry performed by both Paul and Timothy. Part of the guidance in this first letter to the young pastor are instructional. Also, offered to him is what we may call regulatory from Paul because he outlines acceptable qualities and character of people who would hold significant positions in the church.
It could be that Timothy was struggling to maintain his authority as the leading pastor in the church since Paul said not to allow anyone to despise him. He encouraged Timothy to recall his experience when being selected into the ministry. (1 Timothy 4:14)
Putting together the information already mentioned in chapter 4, it is understandable how we may draw the conclusion that Timothy was suffering from anxiety or perhaps an acidic stomach. He needed to hear the words from his mentor. Paul wrote that Timothy should take a little wine for his stomach’s sake and often infirmities. After quick research, I have discovered that there are a few brands of wines today that are easy on the stomach and could be the type Timothy could use.
This is not to say that the drinking of alcohol is recommended by the Bible. Paul’s advice was singular to one person for health reasons. The Bible repeatedly in both the Old and New Testaments condemns drunkenness or over access. Offering guidance for the qualifications of the deacon, he must not be given to much wine. Just like anything else that could be offensive to a weaker brother, Romans 14:21 says to completely abstain from drinking wine.
This passage of Scripture reminds us to have self-control, not using anything to access, even food. We are also to have concern for the well-being of our brothers and sisters whether they are having emotional or physical issues. As a matter of prayer, the mature Christian will lift up his spiritual family for the needs they may be experiencing. We are privileged to share and support those in our church community by being there for whatever is their cause, setting an example, and being aware of whatever struggles they may experience.
