How quickly did you give up on your New Year’s resolution?

Typical New Year’s resolutions include losing weight, getting a better job, getting a divorce or marrying someone, going on a fantastic trip, starting a new hobby, going to counseling, attending church, apologizing to someone, and many more.

These are just examples of what people like to plan as a resolution. The problem is that most of us do not keep or follow through with our resolutions. We have good intentions. We actually start in that direction. Then suddenly we give up. We get distracted.

These and many more resolutions are excellent examples of how we cannot become better persons. It would seem that no matter how hard we try, we just cannot seem to do it.

Sometimes we blame other people or circumstances for not being able to keep our resolution.

Sometimes we decide that the resolution was not realistic in the first place.

The idea of resolutions is an excellent example of how we cannot better ourselves. The Bible says, “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Perhaps the best resolution we could make is to admit that we are sinners and we cannot save ourselves. We cannot improve ourselves to the satisfaction of God’s glory. We cannot enable ourselves in such a way that we have the assurance of going to heaven. The fact is the only way we have such assurance is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross as our Savior. If you have not already, resolved to asked Jesus to be your Savior.
